- A GIF can only hold 256 colours, so photographic content will always band. For anything longer than a few seconds, GIF to MP4 produces a far smaller file that looks better.

How does this make a GIF smaller?
By choosing the 256 colours to keep based on this particular animation rather than a generic palette, and by lowering the frame rate and width. The palette is what decides both the size and how good a GIF looks, and most GIFs are saved with a poor one.
